The RB colloquium with invited guest from academia and practice will address the use of computational design and robotic manufacturing to empower architects to regain control over the design implementation and also allow endusers to participate as co-creators in the design and in the adaptation/customisation of their environments over time.

10:00-10:15 Thijs Asselbergs:

11:45-12:15 Wessel Beerendonk, Studio RAP: Digital Craftmanship in Architecture

12:15-12:45 Jelle Feringa, Aectual: Are robotics challenging the Corbusian maxim “architecture is not building”?

12:45-13:00 Henriette Bier: Q&A / Concluding remarks

Speakers

Marta Malé-Alemany is a doctor in architecture, researcher and curator specialized in the relationship and integration between design and digital production technologies. Her work methodology integrates research and experimentation on materials, the development of special custom software and/or hardware for fabrication, and the use of digital manufacturing processes present in the industry. Her focus is innovating industrial design and construction with novel material solutions and building processes, to expand their creative possibilities and address today’s global challenges. In practice, she has applied this approach in architectural interiors, large-scale installations and building applications. In academia, she accumulates a wide experience teaching advanced design studios and seminars in US and European architectural schools (UCLA Los Angeles, SCIArc Los Angeles, UPENN Philadelphia, MIT Boston, AA London, IAAC Barcelona and other), where she founded and directed several Master and Post-graduate programs.

Wessel van Beerendonk is architect and co-founder of Studio RAP & RAP Technologies. Studio RAP is an innovative architectural design company that combines the power of computational design with innovative digital fabrication methods. The team consists of architects, designers, roboticists, programmers and researchers, who explore innovative technology and try to improve the way architects design, produce, manage and build. RAP Technologies is a technological spin-off originating from Studio RAP. The technology company develops custom production software, empowering manufacturers worldwide. RAP is specialized in developing easy-to-use robot-software for all major industrial robot brands.

Jelle Feringa is CTO of Aectual where he oversees robotic and software engineering, and tends to material and product development. He is co-founder of Odico formwork robotics, the first publicly traded architectural robotics company. He has taught and lectured at the Bartlett, Architectural Association, Paris-Malaquias, ETH Zürich, TU Delft and Aarhus School of Architecture and is an active contributor to open source software. With Thomas Paviot, he has been driving the development of an open source CAD framework, PythonOCC.. He is a founding partner in EZCT Architecture & Design Research. The work of the office is widely exhibited, exhibitions include the Mori Art Museum, Tokyo, Archilab, Orléans, Barbican Gallery Design Miami/Basel. Projects by the office are part of Pompidou Center permanent collection. The work of the office was recently displayed at Imprimer and Compter le Monde.
